A 10 year old girl goes on an adventure with her older brother, 2 friends and her stuffed rabbit named Snugglebuggle, to thank the person that made the delicious jelly she had on her toast for breakfast that morning. In the process, she learns about herself and others. A film short of a fun story about the values of gratitude for 7 to 12 year old children.
I wanted to make a greater difference in my community! So I thought a positive and spiritual- based film geared for children ages 7-12 years old would benefit. In this current culture of instant gratification with millennials, families with busy schedules, and limited meal time discussions, a film that provided a way for families to stop, take a break, and discuss important life’s values could be discussed. Through my own life’s challenges and pursuit of my dreams, I wanted to plant the seed in children that to keep persisting, despite the “unknowns” and challenges in their lives. To be grateful along your journeys would take your further along. Thus, “Thank God For Jelly” was born and I had my lead character in Rebeccah.
Positive values, persistence, hope and spirituality affect all cultures of people. Casting diverse ethnicities of all ages for the film was important for this reason. Character names and numbers were chosen symbolically for their meaning and were meant to add more spirituality depth to the film.
Writing a story, creating a film to make a difference, was only just the start! The support and interest with the subject matter within the community, with my Cast and Crew, was phenomenal and created a close-knit group of people who wanted to make this project the best. I was fortunate to find a DP early on who shared my same visions of the type of film I was interested in making.
With the completion of the film, I wanted to launch a program on gratitude within my son’s Sunday School and other Sunday Schools or other children's programs in the community. The Education Director came up with a lesson plan for 2nd and 3rd graders. This inaugural program was implemented early in February , 2017. Sharing this film with students and their parents opened up discussions about their own values.
I look forward to all of you watching this film short! I encourage each of you to “find your own jelly”, whatever that may be!
This film short was entered into many film festivals. Come check out the Film Awards!
